The revised mockbound arrived yesterday afternoon. If you’re on the Plates Substack list (where I send out digital ‘postcards’ from behind the scenes every Tuesday) you’ll know that this redo (of the entire mock) was a first in a long time. Or perhaps in the history of Plates. Colour discrepancies and trim issues were evident when the initial mockbound arrived a few weeks ago.

Typically, the mockbound is the final stage before going to print-print. Print-print being the 1000-unit print run. No edits. No take backs. Just hoping for the best, crossing all fingers and toes that nobody altered anything in between the mockbound and the production of the final product.

But mockbound V2 wasn’t as “perfect” as I had hoped with new issues: the trim and the spine for sections that were okay in V1 suddenly were lopped off or misaligned. My liaison suspects the errors were because the mockbound is produced by hand as opposed to machine precision. Of course, I’m aware that some issues are minute design details perhaps only noticeable to me. I’m still trying to be more self-aware about when to let go of certain things, when to close one eye (or both), or keep both eyelids propped up with toothpicks.

One day at a time. One mock at a time. One issue at a time.

Plates, Vol.4: Seeds—stuck in the pipeline since June 2021.

We’re almost there.

P/S If you want to get weekly digital postcards / soundbites on the makings, thinkings and musings of Plates, be part of the list here. It’s free to join. See you there.
