PLATES EXPLORES underreported stories of human rights, social justice, intangible cultures and the environment. We use food themes as a conversation starter for alternative narratives. We replate each seemingly overwhelming issue into a palatable and digestible story in hopes of provoking meatier discussions over shared plates.

THROUGH SLOW JOURNALISM and independent field research, we seek out alternatives to mainstream Eurocentric narratives. We interview hidden figures in the field, who do not have the luxury of a press team or access to a publicist; be it a marginalised rice farmer near the Kalimantan-Sarawak border in Borneo; the last generation of Bidayuh shamans and their sacred relationship with water; indigenous farmers and their thoughts on the vilification of the durian fruit in mainstream Eurocentric media; or an enterprising Indonesian housewife turned self-made coffee trader in Northern Sumatra.

PLATES IS MORE than just another food journal.

Nor is it a cookbook or glossy magazine, discarded and forgotten by the end of the month. There are no ads in PLATES. We are not interested in celebrity chef interviews, listicles or restaurant reviews.

Instead, PLATES is an investigative culture journal filled with original long-form non-fiction features, served on a small print run. It is an acquired taste. A collectible. It is a food book that you will come back to again and again. To pick apart and digest meatier, overlooked issues at your own pace. We write—independently—for the readers, who are curious, restless, changemakers and change-seekers in their fields. PLATES is a homegrown publication that you will be proud you discovered, supported and seeded.

Will you choose to make space for alternative narratives at your table?
